I want to get my boyfriend a knife but I don’t know anything about this stuff… what are recommendations on a budget friendly but still nice version of this style of knife?

Budget Friendly to me may not mean the same thing to you but the cheaper the knife typically means cheaper quality. Here’s a Marine Ka-Bar w/ Leather Sheath. Decent price for the real thing:
Well, that one there is a good quality, affordable model.
It’s based Mk2 fighting knife, most commonly associated with KaBar knives. They still make them in both “tactical” models like the CS Leatherneck, as well as traditional models with stacked leather grips and leather sheaths.
They’re really very affordable for what they are. There are cheap copies all over the internet, but they’re garbage. Avoid them.

The knife shown is a Cold Steel Leatherneck in D2 steel. I got mine for around 50-60 on Midwayusa.com. search thier site for fixed blade knifes that are “clip point”. You should be able to find something in your budget. Goodluck

Depends what budget means. I’d say my budget knives are $50-$80. Top price I’d pay for a knife I love is around $350-$400. One of my favorite knives is a $60 Kershaw.

Cold steel makes great affordable knives but if you’re looking for that specific style of fighting knife I’d recommend spending the extra on the Kabar. I don’t know your boyfriend but if it were me the leather stacked handle is a necessity.

As others have said, this is based on a mk2 “kabar” type knife. About $100 new, typically. depending on taste you can get a vintage one on ebay for a good deal, which is the route I went. Ontario knives makes the official USMC knives in this style nowadays, some people say they’re a really good value for the money but I haven’t laid hands on one (someone chime in if you have experience). Alternatively, if the military look isn’t necessary, the Buck 119 is a very good budget clip-point.

USMC Ka-Bar on Amazon for like $85

I would recommend that Cold steel leatherneck instead of the full sized ka-bar . It comes in D2 which is durable and is like $67 right now compared to the ka-bar which runs about $100 for the 1095 version or $150 for the D2 varient.

I’d avoid the one in the pic in favor of a KaBar or Ontario version. D2 steel has very low toughness.

Get an esee (any length really) might be a bit pricey compared to this but is 100% worth the money. Go to smkw, dlt trading, blade hq, or some other reputable retailer to get one.
